The Chelsea manager Rafa Benitez has said that he welcomes the arrival of the Senegalese striker Demba Ba, who recently completed the £ 7 million transfer to the European champions. The 27-year-old arrives with a big reputation of having scored regularly in the Premier league over the last few seasons. He will be providing a welcome addition to the squad according to Benitez, who has said that the lack of options has meant that the Spaniard Fernando Torres has had to virtually play in every game this season. The club recently sold the striker Daniel Sturridge to Liverpool for £ 12 million, which left Torres as the only striker at the club.
As a result, he has played in 31 matches of the 33 Chelsea have played this season. Benitez revealed that he spoke of the need for a striker with Torres. Benitez has also said that he is extremely confident that Demba Ba and Torres can play alongside each other. One of the main reasons for going for the Newcastle United striker is the fact that Chelsea were looking for a player who can immediately come into the team and score goals. They were not looking at a player who needed time to settle in the Premier league.
“Fernando is happy to see good players signing because it means we can win more games. I was talking with him in the last couple of weeks and he said we needed more bodies. We know he is playing too many games but we couldn’t rotate him like we could with other areas of the squad because we did not have many options in attack. With Daniel Sturridge leaving, having Fernando as the only main striker was always a problem,” said Benitez. Torres has scored 14 goals in all competitions for Chelsea this season.
